Salis Studio

A Solace within the city nestled in nature..

Crafted from a mixture of reclaimed woods of Douglas fir, pitch pine and pine. The frame has no screws and is constructed with a mixture of Japanese and European joinery techniques that Craig brought together through his years of making. Craig worked onsite with a small team of local young apprentice carpenters.

The approach to the process and detailing is embedded in the resultant visual qualities of the space. For example the windows that frame a silver birch tree, like a triptych painting and the elements of the darker cherry wood that were used to frame the interior plywood. The roof is raised in the center to allow in the North light to complement the practices of the client as a painter and sculptor. Other interior details included are the simple lighting within the beams, the delicately held reclaimed york stone at the back of the wood stove, an old butler sink with copper exposed pipe work and a reclaimed wood floor.
