how we work
‘Sasa’ means ‘Now’ in Swahili, it feels relevant to make architecture for now, our lifestyles today. ‘Works’ - we believe in a close relationship between the architect and the building practice, much like the once Master Builder who would draw the plans, build and oversee all works.
Projects will be taken on in their entirety with a close relationship with the client, from design through to building works, and incorporate the following approach
- A practical design that is site specific and integrates craftsmanship throughout. The work will incorporate the use of simple material, existing typologies and services, landscape and climate and work with local community and knowledge.
- An interrelationship between the inside and outside is created through an honesty in the construction method that shows a careful consideration of details and how materials join and interrelate. The qualities of materials will be informed by their relationship with the human scale.
- A commitment to make buildings that are thermally and energy efficient. In the main materials used will be low in embodied energy, local, and or reclaimed. Renewable energy systems will be encouraged where workable.
- An aim to incorporate youth and local interns in order to teach ‘hands on skills’ and provide career opportunities that aim to foster a sense of responsibility and a level of personal ownership for their environment.
If a space or building is crafted with a skill and built of materials that are local it will sit at ease within its location, and with its use. This connection to place and quality will in turn inspire a wellbeing within.
The making of this true space evolves by creating a harmony between existing qualities of the site and the architectural intention, each informs the other until a harmony is achieved.
